Bourne, Massachusetts is widely known as the “Gateway to Cape Cod.” Because it straddles the 7.8-mile Cape Cod Canal, anyone driving to the Cape over the iconic Bourne or Sagamore bridges passes right through it.
Bourne is the first town you hit in Barnstable County. It is the only town on Cape Cod that physically sits on both the mainland and the peninsula side, divided in 1914 by the Cape Cod Canal.
It boasts a sparse, suburban feel with plenty of quiet harbors, wooded conservations, and over 50 miles of coastline. Since it doesn’t have the same dense tourist crush as the lower Cape, it’s a peaceful alternative with a deep connection to the water.
